Chiropractic Care for Youngsters

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | May 18, 2018

It’s no secret that neck pain (NP), lower back pain (LBP), mid back pain (MBP) are now acknowledged widely to start early in life. Lifetime prevalence of back and spine pain increases during adolescence, often reaching aggravated, adult levels starting at the age of 18.

Spine and back health should be taught early on. Many believe that we are only as healthy as our spine, after all.

Why Young People Should Consider Chiropractic Care

Young people put stress on their body, whether it’s in school or during extracurricular activities like athletics. Carrying books is an entirely different matter, especially with book bags that are likely not designed with your spine in mind. A lifetime of Chiropractic Care is actually a great way to teach young people about wellness and learn a new lifestyle of loving themselves. While much of the medical community simply prescribe drugs to alleviate the symptoms, chiropractors are more sympathetic to the harsh realities of prescription drug abuse.

Chiropractic Care is holistic, drug-free pain relief that will help kids with athletics, it will help them perform better in their studies, and can make a serious difference — both in the child’s life and in yours!

  • Muscle Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Headaches / Neck Pain
  • Leg Pain

Was that you the past several semesters carrying unwieldy books and slouching in your chair while listening to a lecturer? If so, you might have done some damage to your back and spine that you’re not yet aware of. An adjustment might be just what you need to get back on your feet and hit the ground running for your next exciting chapter.

Why You Should Consider Chiropractic Care for Mom This Mother’s Day

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | May 12, 2018

Moms everywhere this month are likely anticipating lunch at their favorite restaurants, maybe dinner and a movie, maybe roses and chocolate. Spa days and massages are also hot ticket items during Mothers Day. But did you ever consider getting that special person in your life the gift that keeps in giving? Comprehensive Chiropractic Care is a great standout gift for Mothers Day. Read on for a few reasons why below.

1.) Chiropractic Care is Excellent Pain Relief

Whether Mom gets headaches here and there, or if she experiences Tech Neck keeping tabs on you on social media, chances are Moms everywhere can benefit from chiropractic adjustments.

2.) Chiropractic Care is Non-Invasive and Drug-Free

No extensive surgery with questionable results and risks that come attached. Chiropractic care is completely holistic and 100% drug-free.

3.) Helps Mom Fight Dim Bulb

Dim Bulb happens when we’re not firing on all cylinders. As one of our previous blogs discusses, slight misalignment of the vertebrae and subluxation caused by spinal bones moving improperly or positioning in a way that disrupts nerve communications can occur. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to rid the body and brain of these blockages.

3 Ways to Fight Tech Neck

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | May 4, 2018

Tech neck is something that happens to us when we spend a little too much time starting downward with our necks in a flexed state — this might entail your smartphone, or it could be your personal computer or laptop.

The act of looking downward puts your cervical spine in an uncomfortable position, resulting in neck and spine pain, headaches, shoulder pain, and radiating pain in the arms in the short term, but can eventually lead to far more serious situations, like muscle strain, disc injury, arthritis, and nerve impingement.

Set Time Limits for Yourself

Moderation is key here. If you’ve spent the last 15 minutes or so on your device, maybe put it down for a few minutes and switch up your posture. Better yet, incorporate an hourly stretch routine. There are amazing resources online — even some chair yoga tutorials that will do your neck and spine an amazing service.

Accessorize

This might mean investing in a phone or tablet holder that cuts down on neck flexion, or it could mean investing in a new chair with a good headrest that allows you to keep the back of your head flush and not looking downward with the neck flexing forward.

Health Consequences of Sleep Deficiency

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | April 30, 2018

In this day and age many of us wrongfully overvalue requiring little or no sleep to go through our daily lives. You might hear about the high-powered executive only sleeping 4-6 hours nightly. Maybe that works for them now, but that lifestyle is sure to catch up with them down the road.

Read on to learn how prolonged lack of sleep can lead to all sorts of health problems and diseases, even Alzheimer’s.

Are You Putting Sleep in the Backburner?

Chronic sleep loss can put you at an increased at risk for the following:

  • Heart Disease / Heart Failure
  • Heart attack / Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Irregular Heartbeat

Lack of sleep can also affect your sex drive if those serious health issues mentioned above aren’t enough for you.

The Chronic Sleep Deprivation / Alzheimer’s Connection

Prolonged lack of sleep has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Why? Because there’s strong evidence that a good night’s sleep is important for clearing beta-amyloid out of your brain, which is a type of metabolic waste product found in the fluid between neurons. Beta-amyloid buildup impairs brain function and, consequently, is a huge contributor to Alzheimer’s disease.

Lack of Sleep and Dim Bulb

Dim bulb is a condition where you’re not firing on all cylinders. Chiropractic adjustments have been proven not only to help body functionality but also improve brain functionality. Lack of sleep can lead to slower hand-eye coordination, which puts you and others at risk when you’re on the road and makes you less-than-effective in your daily life.

What is a good night of sleep? Nothing less than 7-9 hours on a nightly basis.

Barton Chiropractic Clinic believes in promoting health and wellness just as much as we believe in our innovative yet time-honored chiropractic care. Contact our friendly staff today to set up your initial consultation with Dr. Diane Barton.

Sciatica and Chiropractic Care

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | April 25, 2018

Sciatica is a condition that starts in the lower back or the buttocks and stretches into either one or both legs. Sciatica comes along with a pain that can vary in intensity, from moderate to severe, occasional to constant.

Sciatica is Synonymous with the Following Sensations:

  • Burning
  • Aching
  • Shooting Pain
  • Radiating Pain
  • Tingling
  • Numbness

Remember that sciatica is not a disorder, but simply a symptom of a disorder. Why?

Because sciatica is generally caused by compressed nerves.

Sciatic nerve compression to be exact. Disorders commonly known to promote sciatic nerve pain include:

  • Herniated/Bulging Discs (Also Called Slipped Discs)
  • Lumbar Spine Subluxations (Misaligned Vertebral Bodies)
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth
  • Tumors

Sciatic nerve compression can also come about from conditions that have nothing to do with the back or spine, like diabetes or constipation.

How to Treat Sciatica in Homewood, IL

Spinal manipulation is an excellent avenue to explore if you’d like to get back to being functional the all-natural way. After all, the primary purpose of chiropractic treatment at Barton Chiropractic Clinic is to activate your body’s potential to heal itself. We base our treatments on scientific principles. Day-to-day grinds restrict spinal movement, which leads to pain, reduced function (dim bulb), and diminished performance. Our treatments are completely non-surgical, non-invasive, and drug-free. 3 Spine-Friendly Earth Day Activities

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | April 20, 2018

Celebrating Earth Day might mean planting a tree to some, but to others, Earth Day might mean a recently-made obligation to experience nature and all of the good that this planet we occupy has to offer.

Barton Chiropractic Clinic would like to go over some ways that our patients and readership can experience the great outdoors without experiencing spine or back pain.

After all, as far as movement and overall activity are concerned, your back and spine are really at the center of it all.

Outdoor Yoga

You can park yourself at your favorite clearing (or your go-to spot at the beach) and stretch it out for any amount of time you please — 20-50 minutes would be the optimum timeframe to achieve maximum effect.

Jogging / Hiking

Jogging might not be the best for your back, but hiking is a viable alternative. And, if you must engage in running and cross-training, please make sure that you supplement your program with yoga or an alternative form of stretching.

Climbing

Make sure that you have a friend and the right equipment to pull this one off. Taking the time to practice at an indoor facility might not be a bad idea.

What Do I Do if I Need a Chiropractor Near Me?

If you experience any sort of discomfort this Earth Day or during the Spring and Summer seasons, do not hesitate to call Barton Chiropractic Clinic. We’ll get you back to active in no time.

Got Kids? Hold Your Baby Without Hurting Your Spine

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | April 16, 2018

Most of the time when a person carries a child, the main focus is on the child, and that’s completely right and well. Obviously, you want to hold onto that sweet little one — we’re not going to fault you for that. However, at the same time, you can be friendly to your back while looking out for the young.

Read on for a few ways you can be spine-friendly with the munchkins around. So many of us either have kids, have family members or friends with kids, or come into contact with kids in our daily lives. If you’re going to pick one up (make sure you have permission, of course), you should lift with your legs. Don’t bend downwards and put awkward pressure on your spine and lower back.

For Those Who Have Kids and Those Who Are Expecting

Don’t hold a baby outward as it also puts undue stress on your back — the spine, the muscles, everything really. Hold the baby close to your body with a wrap-around. That way your muscles and back don’t strain. Go one step further and get a fabric wrap or a back-friendly carrier to make sure you’re not putting stress on your spine on a daily basis.

Engage Your Core

You’ve heard trainers say this before, but it doesn’t make them any less right.

If you exercise your core — your hips, abdomen, and lower back (the internal and external obliques, the rotatores, and the transversus abdominis) — you’re less likely to sustain an injury. Strengthening your core will end up strenghening your back in the process.

If you experience pain or stain in the back, the spine, the legs, or even any sort of persistent headache that you might think comes along with parenting or pregnancy, contact Barton Chiropractic Clinic today for a consultation. There’s a lot we can do the all-natural way, without prescription meds or cumbersomle surgery.

Barton Chiropractic Clinic Turns 30 This Month!

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | April 13, 2018

It’s Friday the 13th, which generally is a day most consider somewhat high risk, due to superstitions. It is today that we are also reminding our client base and readership that we’ve been practicing chiropratic care over here at Barton Chiropractic Clinic for the last 30 years!

Yes, that’s right, our practice is turning 30 this month!

To celebrate this milestone, we’d just like to go over what we do and why we do it.

Experienced Chiropractic Care — Three Decades and Counting

Our philosophy of chiropractic care is to get to the root of the true source of pain. It’s by finding the real problem or source of dysfunction that we aim to fix it in the most efficient and holistic way possible. We never use unnecessary instrumentation and we never sacrifice giving optimum patient care.

For our patients, we always work within the regulations of care to achieve the best treatment possible. We use a wide range of effective and natural chiropractic manipulation treatment techniques (also referred to as CMTs) instead of pursuing over-the-counter and prescription medications that will only alleviate symptoms. We’re not here to simply mask the pain. We’re here to correct the root of it.

For 30 Years We’ve Helped People in Need of Chiropractic Care

As an experienced chiropractor in Homewood, IL, Dr. Barton helps many individuals who are experiencing the following health issues:

  • Chiropractic Pain (Commonly Due to Generative Disks)
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Hip Pain / Hip Misalignment
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Immobility
  • Neck Pain / Neck Stiffness
  • Pinched Nerves
  • Static nerve pain
  • Spinal Misalignment Corrections
  • Adjustments

Spine Friendly Spring Activities That’ll Get You Outdoors

By Barton Chiropractic Clinic | April 11, 2018

Now that spring has sprung, we thought it’d be a nice change of pace to discuss some outdoor spine-friendly activities for you to engage in during the warm season. We decided to focus on low risk but high fun!

Read on to learn how to stay fit this spring and summer without compromising your spine.

Paddle Boarding

You probably hear a lot of trainers or gym enthusiasts telling people to engage their core. They’re not wrong. If you head to a lake, the ocean, or a reservoir, standup paddleboarding is a fun activity — and it eliminates Lower Back Pain. This activity also forces you to engage your core (which isn’t just your abs, but also your hips, your lower back, buttocks — the mid-section of your body).

Rock Climbing

If you do this outdoors, please please please practice the utmost precaution. We won’t fault you for heading to an indoor facility if you’re hesitant to scale the high peaks. Rock climbing strengthens your back, and it’s also considered low-to-no impact, as long as you’re practicing good form. Again, make sure you use good judgment and safe practices.

Cycling

We like cycling because it’s another non-weight bearing exercise for your spine and back. If you’re on the roads, you don’t have to worry about too many shocks to the spine. Use the stationary bike if you don’t like the idea of sharing the roads. Make sure your seat and handlebars are adjusted properly and that you use the right footwear.

If you’d like to know more activities that will make your spring and summertime memorable without putting your back and spine at risk, contact Barton Chiropractic Clinic at (708) 922-1400 today. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss preventive measures you can take, as well as answer any questions you may have about our services and treatments that will help you stay active and optimized.
